An Early 20th Century Comprador Mansion
In December 2017, the historic mansion now called Rumah Tangsi was beautifully restored after five years of work. Built between 1907 and 1909 by Loke Yew for Loke Chow Kit, the mansion blends European and Chinese styles. Located on Jalan Tangsi, it has served as a private home, the Empire Hotel, and the Peninsular Hotel. In 1973, it became the PAM Centre for the Malaysian Institute of Architects.
Declared a National Heritage Building in 2012, it was renamed Rumah Tangsi. Now managed by Seetizens Lab with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), it hosts cultural and art events, including the secretariat for Unesco’s KL World Book Capital 2020. The restoration shows Kuala Lumpur’s commitment to preserving its historical buildings.
